Painting the Face and Figure-7 weeks- ALL LEVELS
This class will explore the long tradition of painting from life and understanding the face and figure. Working from a live model, and photography sources, these sessions will cover posing and lighting the model, basic drawing of the head and figure, achieving beautiful flesh tones and composing portraits. Painting lessons will stress proportion, design and capturing a likeness. Color lessons will cover the progression of a limited palette to a full color palette, how to capture the quality of light, and expressive use of color.
Recommended materials for this class will be provided. We use walnut-oil based paints in the classroom.
Exploring Pattern in Portraiture- 7 weeks- ALL LEVELS
A different direction in studying portraiture, this course will explore the use of pattern to create a likeness as well as the use of pattern in figure-ground relationships. If you've studied portraiture before this class will push you in new directions. If you're re-entering art-making, no better way to do it. Using a wide range of resources: art history, textiles, and live models, this is a fascinating way to explore portraiture. Think: Chuck Close, Henri Matisse, Gustave Klimt, Vincent Van Gogh, Outsider Artists.
Recommended materials for this class will be provided. We use walnut-oil based paints in the classroom.
Water-based Painting-7 weeks- ALL LEVELS
This painting class will cover foundation lessons in form, shape, color, and composition using water-based media of your choice (watercolor, gouache, acrylic, water-soluble oil). We'll work on creative ideas each week to build up your vocabulary of painting styles and methods.
If you have something specific you want to explore, we can do that, too!
Great to (re)introduce the fine art of creating works on paper and canvas. These are small, intimate classes, guaranteed to introduce and refine techniques and experiments to give you confidence and creative ideas. Bring your current materials or see the supply list upon registration.
Painting Studio-7 weeks- ALL LEVELS
Structured somewhat as an open studio, here is the class for anyone ready to enter (re-enter) art making and needing a gentle hand to know where to start, or those looking for a place to work on their own projects! This class has been created so you can bring the materials of your choice (walnut-based oil paints, collage, watercolor, gouache and acrylic materials). This is a great opportunity to experiment and work to find your own voice. Note: being 'creative' doesn't mean being without form. All art making requires understanding of materials and a general guide to their use. If you have a project you are already working on, this is a great non-intimidating environment to get input and guidance.
Kids Eco-Art Class- 7 weeks
Taught by Carson Fisk-Vittori
This is a fun class for kids to explore the importance of recycling and reusing while making cool art projects. In this class we will make collages, and sculptures out of found materials. Students will re-use everyday objects that may be considered junk or garbage to create amazing re-purposed art. We will talk about recycling, folk art, the found object, and DIY culture. Projects include mobile-making, paper mache sculptures, plant terrariums, and collages.
UPDATE: Classes are held at 1917 W Division St. and are taught by Layne Jackson unless otherwise noted.
